Đối với bên đen: Bắt tốt qua đường là việc Tốt đen đứng ở hàng thứ 4 được phép bắt Tốt trắng (cột bên cạnh) ở hàng thứ 2 nếu Tốt Trắng tiến hai ô.

Ở hình bên, Tốt đen nằm ở ô d4. Khi Tốt trắng tiến từ ô e2 đến ô e4 (đứng ngang hàng với Tốt đen) thì sẽ bị Tốt đen tiêu diệt.

Khi tiêu diệt Tốt trắng ô e4, Tốt đen di chuyển theo đường chéo đến ô e3.
