Vua Gia Long tên là Nguyễn Phúc Ánh

Vua Gia Long tên là Nguyễn Phúc Ánh (Anh), ngoài ra còn có tên là Chủng và Noãn, con thứ 3 của Nguyễn Phúc Côn (Luân) và bà Nguyễn Thị Hoàn. Nguyễn Phúc Ánh sinh ngày 15 tháng Giêng năm Nhâm Ngọ (8-2-1762).
Năm 1775, lợi dụng sự suy sụp của triều đình chúa Nguyễn do cuộc khởi nghĩa Tây Sơn, quân Trịnh vào chiếm Phú Xuân khiến Nguyễn Phúc Ánh phải trốn vào Nam. Từ đó ông bôn tẩu gian nan, tìm đủ mọi cách chiêu tập lực lượng để giành lại vương quyền cho họ Nguyễn.
Năm 1792, vua Quang Trung mất, quân Tây Sơn ngày càng yếu và quân Nguyễn ngày càng lớn mạnh. Năm 1801, quân Nguyễn do Nguyễn Phúc Ánh chỉ huy đã đánh chiếm Quy Nhơn và chiếm Thuận Hóa.
Ngày 1-2-1802, Nguyễn Phúc Ánh lên ngôi Hoàng đế ở Phú Xuân, lấy niên hiệu là Gia Long, chính thức lập nên triều đại nhà Nguyễn. Tháng 3 năm 1804, vua Gia Long đổi quốc hiệu nước ta là Việt Nam .
Gia Long làm vua được 18 năm (1802-1819), mất vào ngày 19 tháng Chạp năm Kỷ Mão (ngày 3 tháng 2 năm 1820), hưởng thọ 58 tuổi. Sau khi mất, bài vị vua Gia Long được đưa vào thờ ở Thế Miếu và có Miếu hiệu là Thế Tổ Cao Hoàng đế.
